Elephants break out of Dinokeng Game Reserve

On the 17th April 2017, the ERP 911 Elephant Team were woken up at 04:15 AM by telephone calls, informing us of unimaginable news. 8 of the Dinokeng Game Reserve’s elephants had breached the reserve’s boundaries and were over 16 km’s away from the reserve, heading towards the densely populated towns of Cullinan and Refilwe.

Samara Private Game Reserve is a 13,000 ha reserve found on the outskirts of the Great Escarpment in the Eastern Cape. It is a family-run initiative, bought by the Tompkins over 20 years ago. Breslau Elephant Drive

Over 120 elephants had crossed the Limpopo River into Breslau and were causing significant damage to the habitat and properties. Considering the norm is to have 1000 hectares per elephant, it was just not sustainable to have this density of elephants on this property. The owners would have had to consider the option of culling if they could not get the elephants off the property.

Dinokeng - Zinave Translocation

Dinokeng Game Reserve is located just north of Pretoria, next to the N1 motorway by Hammenskraal. The reserve was struggling with funding and approached ERP for help with their elephants. In January 2017, ERP started monitoring the reserve’s elephants, primarily the four elephant bulls that were breaking fences.

KwaZulu-Natal / Mozambique cross-Border Human-Elephant Conflict Resolution

Elephants migrated freely between Southern Mozambique and the former Northern Maputaland (now referred to as the northern part of uMkhanyakude District), South Africa, until 1983. During that year, the local chief on the South African side (iNkosi Tembe) anticipated that elephant migration from Mozambique could become a security problem for his people and in an effort to pre-empt a crisis, decided to proclaim the Tembe Elephant Park, an area measuring approximately 30,000 hectares under his jurisdiction on the South African side of the border. Fencing began in in 1984.
